SCS National Database

Database is a structured set of data stored electronically which can be processed and accessed in various ways. Databases have become an integral part of every field today and what dictates the world today is data. From consumer products to high end space programs, every single design and measure is based on datasets. The implication and importance has been long recognized in the field of medicine .Cardiac surgery has been the first specialty ,where outcome research has been done based on registries and databases. In 1977 , the cardiac surgical society of Great Britain and Ireland made reporting voluntary on results followed by the German Society in 1978.

The worlds premier cardiac surgical database , the STS database was started in 1989. The primary intention of the North American association was to improve quality and patient safety and it still remains the mission and vision of the STS database. The Adult Cardiac surgery database ( ACSD) of the STS is the largest with 3,800 participating surgeons and over 6.2 million records.

The cardiac surgery specialty has been constantly growing in our country with many centers of excellence . The numbers are increasing every year and newer procedures are adopted without any time delay from the rest of world. In spite of this we have not made a mark in terms of scientific contribution to the global knowledge. This is primarily due to lack of data. The need for a database has always been talked about in our meetings but till date none. In an attempt to change this scenario the Society of coronary surgeons is founded with database being one of its pillars.

Join the Database

The Society will collaborate with the STS , the most reputed and the premier database in our speciality and all the members of SCS will have the privilege of access to the STS database and enjoy all the benefits . The scope that this will provide to individual surgeons and collectively as a society will be profound and put us in a scientific platform where our work will be recognized and appreciated.

As a national leader in health care transparency and accountability, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons believes that the public has a right to know the quality of surgical outcomes.

To further this goal, the Society has established the STS Public Reporting initiative, which allows participants in the STS National Database to voluntarily report their surgical outcomes to the public on the STS website.

Public reporting is available for the following STS National Database components: Adult Cardiac Surgery Database, General Thoracic Surgery Database, and Congenital Heart Surgery Database. At this time, public reporting is not available for the Intermacs Database.

The STS/ACC TVT Registry, created through a collaboration between STS and the American College of Cardiology (ACC), monitors patient safety and real-world outcomes related to transcatheter valve replacement and repair procedures – emerging treatments for valve disease patients. Employing state-of-the-art heart valve technology, transcatheter heart valve procedures provide new treatment options for patients who are not eligible for conventional heart valve replacement or repair surgery.

The TVT Registry has been approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to meet the registry requirements outlined in the national coverage decisions for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR).
